For many journalists and their families, the arrival of the pandemic in March 2020 changed everything. Work disappeared, income evaporated, and the future looked bleak. But when it seemed there was nowhere else to turn, the Journalists’ Charity has offered hope.

During the last 2 years the charity has given financial assistance to journalists of all ages and from all sectors and backgrounds. We offered emergency support from day 1, and continue to provide assistance to those impacted by the pandemic.

The shortlist for the 2022 Journalists’ Charity Wales Media Awards www.walesmediaawards.co.uk has been announced.

The Wales Media Awards are organised on behalf of the Journalists’ Charity by Spencer David with the support of headline sponsor Camelot. As we prepare to welcome in the New Year, we wanted to share some insights around how the charity is supporting the journalists of the future.

In Spring this year, we launched the first jobs fund, a unique new initiative aimed at providing financial support to new journalists struggling with work related costs.

The idea is to help remove some of the financial barriers which often prevent journalists from joining, or staying in the industry.

Former ITV News editor Geoff Hill posthumously given Public Service prize at British Journalism Awards supported by the Journalists’ Charity.

Geoff Hill, the ITV News editor who died in September aged 52, was posthumously given the Public Service Award at the British Journalism Awards 2021.

We’re looking for work which will have appeared between 1 October 2020 and 30 September 2021. Work published or broadcast between 1 March 2020 and 30 September 2021 relating to the COVID pandemic ONLY will also be accepted.

Founded by Charles Dickens and a fellowship of parliamentary writers in the 1860s the Journalists’ Charity, formerly known as the Newspaper Press Fund, was set up to support the journalists who provided political challenge and scrutiny on behalf of society.
