His Majesty The King has spoken of the ‘unique and vital role’ played by regional journalists as part of a media reception held at Buckingham Palace on March 26.
Around 400 journalists from across the country were invited to the event, which was hosted by The King and The Queen, who serves as the charity’s Patron. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, the Rt Hon Lisa Nandy MP also attended.
Echoing the themes of the charity’s new animated campaign which champions journalists and their contribution to society, His Majesty acknowledged the challenging circumstances impacting the industry,
‘I know how commercial pressures and changing technologies have had a significant impact on your industry. But as the media landscape has changed, so too many of you have adapted and innovated, finding ways of sharing your journalism and engaging audiences in new and creative ways.
‘It is in everyone’s interest that you should succeed. For without a thriving and financially robust regional media, we would all be the poorer.’
The charity’s Chief Executive James Brindle, (pictured with HM The King) took the opportunity to praise the dedication and commitment of regional journalists, whilst highlighting the challenges facing the industry. The event also served to promote the charity’s expanding support offer available for journalists and former journalists nationwide.
