What a day to remember – a full house, laughter galore and raising thousands for our charity.
It was a very special event held at Edgbaston Cricket Club in Birmingham where legendary comedian Jasper Carrott performed a set to mark his 80th birthday.
On mega form, the 325-strong audience were in stitches, mesmerised by the quick fire gags and showing their appreciation by giving him a standing ovation.
And it was very much a two way street, with Midlands District committee member Sarah Whitticase declaring: “There was so much love in the room for Jasper.”
The wider feedback was equally positive, with many hailing a superb afternoon, compered by another legend, Bob Warman, journalist and long-time TV presenter.
A final count is still to take place but it has brought in at least £20,000.
Jasper has been a supporter of the charity for many years and was recently appointed a life vice president.
Derek Inman, Midlands chairman, said: “Jasper at 80 – what a milestone. One of the funniest comics the region has ever produced. A real honour that he chose to celebrate the occasion with us.
“He and his wife Hazel have been so enthusiastic, providing great insight and indeed great fun at our planning meetings.
“A big thank-you too for very generous sponsor Dr Tim Watts, lifetime president of Pertemps Network, whose backing has made not just this Journalists’ Charity occasion – but many others in the past – possible.
“Our gratitude also goes to those individuals and companies who donated their time and some wonderful prizes for our auction and raffle.
“Members of the Charity’s West Midlands committee put in so much hard work organising the lunch. Special mention to Lois Burley, Marie-Helene Matthews, Laurie Upshon, Rob Perks and of course Bob Warman. Their dedication, patience and expertise brought all the pieces together.”
Photographs were by Jas Sansi, another familiar face around the media scene.
Long lunches still survive – hurrah!
