WHAT A STORY!

10 September, 2025

Calling all past and present journalists and press photographers.

Here is your golden opportunity to contribute your favourite funny anecdote or media memory to a new anthology, What A Story!, and help the Journalists’ Charity.

This compilation will be published by journalists Nigel Heath and Peter Gibbs in association with the charity and half the profits will go to help it provide life-changing support at a time when journalism has never been more important.

The two were colleagues with Bristol United Press in the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s – Nigel was a district reporter and later Port of Bristol correspondent on the Bristol Evening Post and Peter was Assistant Editor with the Western Daily Press.

“That blasted Heath has scooped us again he would mutter, after one of my port stories had made the Post’s Page One lead,” says Nigel.

Peter’s contribution to the new anthology will tell how legendary Western Daily Press editor Eric Price told him to get an interview or else with film star Cary Grant, when he brought his new bride, Dyan Cannon, to Bristol.

The news had been broken by Eric’s former newspaper, the Daily Express, and he had been incensed to be scooped on his own patch.

Even though Peter was told to “Buzz off”, after chasing Cary to his honeymoon suite, he ended with a Page One story, praise from the man himself and an offer of a proper interview at a later date, although sadly he was never to take this up.

Please submit your contributions of 250-500 words as Arial 12 Word. Documents with any available images to: peter.gibbs2@sky.com
