Making a real difference in 2022…

21 December, 2022

At the beginning of the year, we gave financial support to Mark who was made redundant after 20 years. He was desperately worried about providing for his family…

“For the first time in my life, I just didn’t know what we were going to do. Thank you for the terrific news of your support grant which has really lifted a great weight and has brought tears to my wife’s eyes.  I simply cannot begin to describe how grateful we are.”

In Spring, we helped Karen, a local newspaper journalist in the Northwest who was struggling emotionally and financially following the death of her mother who she cared for…

“Your support is wonderful news and I’m thrilled to bits! It’s such a massive relief, and I can’t thank you enough. The charity is a total lifesaver. You will not believe the massive joy this has brought me. This help really does change my life when things looked their bleakest.”

In Summer, we helped broadcast journalist Bree get back on her feet after she’d been the victim of a nasty physical assault…

“I’m so overwhelmed I’ve been holding back tears. Thank you so much for your generosity. As soon as I’m able to donate to thank you all I will.  Thank you for changing my life. I appreciate what you’ve done enormously.”

In Autumn, we gave financial assistance to a journalist in Northern Ireland who had started receiving death threats and was worried for the safety of her family…

“This will make a HUGE difference to me and my family at this difficult time. I can’t thank the charity enough. In such dark times, you’ve given me light and it burns bright. Thank you again.”

As living costs began to soar this year, the charity has received more requests for help, especially from working journalists like Mo…

“Even though me and my partner are working, when the boiler broke, we just couldn’t afford to fix it. If it wasn’t for your advice with our bills and debts and of course the vital financial support, I honestly don’t know where we’d be. Thank you so very much”

Meanwhile, the charity has helped a cross section of younger journalists during 2022 through the first jobs fund…

Katherine in London received assistance for relocation.

“Thank you so much for your help, I’m so happy and grateful!! You have no idea how much this means. Without it, I really don’t think I could have carried on with my work in journalism.”

Rob in the Northwest was given help to fix his car.

“Many thanks to the Journalists Charity for helping me keep my car on the road. My new patch is a rural one, and having a car is part of my new (and first) contract, so I really couldn’t have accepted the job without your support. Thanks again!

Olivia from the Midlands was given support with rent and travel.

“WOW! At such a difficult and stressful time, it’s easy to think about giving up, but this is the mega boost I needed to help me get through a move and stay focused. Thank you, Journalists’ charity!”
